Chickasaws qualify nine for state wrestling
New Hampton/Turkey Valley had itself one whale of a day at the Class 2A district tournament as the Chickasaws had six champions, qualified nine wrestlers for the state tournament and ran away from the field to win the team title.
Coach Nick Hemann’s team piled up 186 points, 89 more than runner-up Osage.
Carson Babcock (120), MaX Babcock (132), Michael Blockhus (138), Noah Fye (145), Noah Glaser (170) and Areon Day (220) all won district titles for New Hampton/Turkey Valley while Mason Cleveland (126), Cale Reicks (170) and Evan Rosonke (182) all took second and also earned trips to the traditional state tournament that opens on Thursday.
The Chickasaws’ other three wrestlers who qualified for the district meet — Johnny Dreckman (106), Clayton Taylor (152) and Max Schwickerath (195) – all took third, but maybe the toughest loss among that trio was Schwickerath’s 5-4 defeat in a true-second match.
Still, the nine qualifiers is believed to be a school record, and the Chickasaws, who are the top seed for the state duals that will be held on Wednesday, are definitely one of the contenders when it comes to the traditional tournament.
