Trojans make a mark for small schools

The fact that Turkey Valley’s boys finished third in the nine-team New Hampton coed invitational Thursday came as no shock to coach Mark Scott, despite the Trojans being the smallest school in the field.“Surprised, no,” he said of the team’s efforts. “Happy, yes.”There were a pair of 3A schools in attendance as Waverly-Shell Rock and Crestwood joined a group of three 2A and four 1A schools in the first outdoor meet Mother Nature’s allowed Turkey Valley this season.The sprint medley started the running part of the meet out on a high note for the Trojans as Evan Drilling, Mason Goerend, Will Einwalter and Elliott Dietzenbach won the race in 1:40.84.Another win came in the shuttle hurdle, where Einwalter, who competed in a trapshooting meet before he made the trip to New Hampton, was followed by Keegan Balk, Cale Reicks and Kyle Langreck. Langreck had a strong anchor leg and also finished second in the 110 hurdles.The win was more impressive considering the team hasn’t been able to practice on the home track. And the 1:06.24 beat all the best TV shuttle hurdle times in recent years.
