Chickasaw girls head into break with momentum

The long Christmas break, in which the Chickasaw girls only compete with each other in practice, was cut shorter by a day when the Border Battle game from last Saturday was postponed to Tuesday, a day after New Hampton played at Independence.

Not quite there yet

New Hampton boys basketball coach Chad Sweitzer sat in Charles City’s new gymnasium Tuesday night and put it bluntly.  “We’ve shown we can play with these teams,” he said after the Class 3A eighth-ranked Comets pulled away from New Hampton for a 7

Grinding out some wins

The wins for the Nashua-Plainfield wrestling team were nice, but the losses and the lessons they taught may be just as important.  In the end, coach Al Frost will take the first half of the season that came to an end with a 2-1 night at the Huskie

Trojans take care of the basketball

Chickasaws make statement at Independence

Yeah, New Hampton is pretty good at wrestling.  Just ask the other 24 teams that took part in the inaugural Independence Invitational Friday and Saturday.  Yet, Chickasaw coach Nick Hemann, as happy as he was with winning a team title, knows winni

Numbers are low as Trojans open season

The stories for the Turkey Valley wrestlers may be a bit on the short side this season.  There are seven out for the sport, but a couple that are new to the sport didn’t wrestle in the South Hardin quadrangular Tuesday as the Trojans started compe

Chickasaws endure rough season opener

Chad Sweitzer stood in the hallway at New Hampton High School and shook his head.  He knows one game does not make a season — especially when it comes against a Class 4A school with a Division I recruit — but it didn’t take a rocket scientist to r
