Plenty of fight
Keegan Tenge and his New Hampton wrestling teammates share one common bond with Chickasaw coach Nick Hemann. They hate losing. “But you know what, take away five or so matches, and I’m totally happy with this weekend,” Hemann said the day after his team finished third in the 32-team Battle of Waterloo. “We showed a lot of fight and I know my guys, they’re going to learn from this and be better for it when late January and February roll around.” After rolling to two dual wins on Thursday, New Hampton claimed its bracket title on Friday at the Battle of Waterloo with wins over Waterloo West, Davenport Assumption and Indianola on a day that included Tenge becoming the fourth 100-win wrestler on the Chickasaw roster. Saturday didn’t go quite as well as the Class 2A top-ranked Chickasaws couldn’t hold a 21-20 lead and fell to top-ranked West Des Moines Valley 47-27, fell to Northeast Iowa Conference rival Waverly-Shell Rock 37-33 and then beat Western Dubuque 52-19 in the championship pool at the annual dual tournament held in Waterloo’s Young Arena. “I think it shows a lot with the way we ended it,” Tenge said. “I wouldn’t expect anything less from our guys. When you’re down, you have to respond.” Start with Friday’s bracket...... Which may be found in the Dec. 20 Tribune.
