Deborah C. Bonfig, 68

Deborah C. Bonfig, age 68, of Ionia, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at Linn Haven Rehab and Health Care in New Hampton.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with Father Brian Dellaert celebrating. The burial will be held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Ionia.Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, at Ionia Funeral Home, with a 4:30 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Monday.Online condolences for Debbie’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com. Memorials may be directed to the ALS Association Iowa Chapter at www.alsaiowa.com.Deborah Catherine Bonfig was born April 28, 1950, to Ralph and Kathleen (Adams) Whiteman in New Hampton.The family moved to Evansdale. Debbie attended school in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1968.She then attended University of Northern Iowa, where she studied teaching with a focus in middle school math and graduated in 1972.On June 23, 1973, Debbie was united in marriage to Richard Bonfig at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. The couple made their home in Ionia where they raised their three children, Melissa, Eric and Craig.Debbie was employed at Sara Lee in New Hampton for several years until its closing.She taught at Calmar Middle School and then was a paraprofessional and substitute teacher for New Hampton School District, retiring in 2012.Debbie enjoyed gardening, knitting, and crocheting. She was active in her church, and enjoyed biking and UNI sports.She was a member of St. Boniface Church in Ionia, Rosary Society and UNI Alumnus Association.Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard “Dick” Bonfig of Ionia; her children, Melissa (Joel) Schossow of New Hampton, Eric Bonfig of Traer, and Craig Bonfig of Franklin, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Lincoln and Eleanor; her brothers, Michael (Sherry) Whiteman of Cedar Falls, Kenneth Whiteman of Littleton, Iowa, Dennis Whiteman of Raymond, David Whiteman of Evansdale; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel (Mary Ann) Bonfig of Cottonwood, Ariz., and David (Karen) Bonfig of Ionia, and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Diane Hurley and brother, Faye Whiteman.
