Chickasaws in solid position at state
As far as coach Nick Hemann is concerned, New Hampton will head into the second day of the Class 2A state tournament right where it needs to be.The Chickasaws went a perfect 6-for-6 during the opening round Thursday night as Michael Millage at 126, Keaton Geerts at 138 and Noah Hopp at 220 all picked up pins; Noah Fye at 132 won a major decision; and Ryan Gorman at 160 and Noah Glaser at 170 got decisions. The perfect showing landed the Chickasaws in third place in the team standings as Solon leads the tournament with 27.5 points while Ballard has 20, one more than New Hampton."We've got to keep winning," Hemann said. "That was the goal today - get everyone through - and right now we have to realize that we can only control what we can control."Still, the coach who led New Hampton to the state dual team title on Wednesday was pleased with his team's performance."To pick up seven bonus points, yeah, that could be huge down the road," he said. "We've got some hammers down here, and you know, honestly, we left some hammers at home because of our district. But that's Northeast Iowa wrestling. The six we have here can all score."- For more on the state wrestling tournament, refer back to nhtrib.com and follow the Tribune on Twitter @NHTribune
