Vernon Soldwisch, 78

Vernon Soldwisch, age 78 of Nashua, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church, Nashua. Military rites will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post.
Friends greeted the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home-Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Vernon Duane Soldwisch was born June 4, 1939, in rural Bremer County, the son of Ewald and Elda (Bergmann) Soldwisch. 
He received his education in Waverly and graduated from the Waverly High School in 1958. 
While in school and after high school he worked in the area as a farm hand. 
On Aug. 2, 1964, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly, he married Virginia Liddle. To this union four children were born. The couple divorced in 2000. 
Vernon served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge. 
Following his service to the country, he began his 30 year career with John Deere in Waterloo, retiring in 1992. 
Vernon always stayed busy after retirement and helped in maintenance and cleaning at the Southgate Motel and Super 8 Motels in New Hampton for several years. He continued helping with maintenance at the Little Brown Church in Nashua as well. 
In his free time he loved woodworking, making trains, tractors and numerous other toys. 
He also enjoyed golfing at the Nashua Country Club and spent time deer hunting.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Joe) Biggs-Mathews of Waterloo; two sons, Randy (Kathy) Soldwisch of Park Rapids, Minn., and Gary (Andrea) Soldwisch of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Joshua Watts, Benjamin Soldwisch, Madison Soldwisch, Emma Soldwisch and Izabella Soldwisch; one brother, Donald (Alice) Soldwisch of Readlyn; and two sisters, Darlene Ball of Genovese, Ill., and LaDonna (Robert) Wamsley of Clarksville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger in infancy; two sisters, Melba Schoonover and Margaret Jurgens; and two brothers-in-law, Gene Ball and Thomas Jurgens.
