Trojan boys get UIC win; girls fall to MFL

Lead Summary

Despite two Turkey Valley girls putting up a career-high scoring night, the Lady Trojans started Friday’s doubleheader against MFL Mar-Mac with a 57-40 loss, their first conference loss of the season.
The boys followed with a 56-35 win over the Bulldogs; they also have only one Upper Iowa Conference loss.
Coach Carla Nymeyer picked MFL in the preseason to be contenders for the UIC title, and the unbeaten Bulldogs had scored 79 points in each of their first two conference wins. By the half Turkey Valley trailed 26-21 and MFL increased the lead to as much as 10 points early in the third quarter, but consecutive 3-point shots by Breanna Busta brought the Trojan girls to within four, 31-27 with 4:37 left in the period.
By the end of three, it was still anyone’s game with the MFL girls up 35-30.
“I think our girls might have been surprised to be in the game like that,” coach Carla Nymeyer said. “What killed us was our rebounding, we gave up too many second-chance shots tonight.
