Michael “Mike” Paul Carlin was born October 4, 1941, in New Hampton, to Leonard and Regina “Betty” (Day) Carlin. Mike attended the Country School near Reilly Ridge, graduated from New Hampton High School, Loras College, and received his Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Mike was united in marriage to Dorothy Schwickerath on November 21, 1964, at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington.
Mike touched so many lives through his decades of service in the New Hampton community. He taught middle school English at the New Hampton Community Schools for 35 years during which he directed 35 musicals. He will undoubtedly be checking our grammar from above! Mike served as President of the Music Boosters and President of the St. Joseph’s School Board. He started and, for more than 30 years, directed the St. Joseph’s Church choir. For the past 10 years he was a board member at the CEC. Mike did part-time bookkeeping for Harvestall, and prepared taxes for generations of friends and family.
Mike enjoyed being with others as much as they enjoyed being with him. He loved card clubs with friends, gatherings at the country club, trips to the casino, and bus excursions. He was a true patriarch devoted to and cherished by his family. He was so proud of his grandchildren and made it a priority to attend as many of their games, concerts, and special events as possible.
Michael remains cherished by his beloved wife of 53 years Dorothy; loving children Michele (Timothy) Sailstad of Duluth, MN, Denise Carlin of Santa Monica, CA, David (Pam) Carlin of Huxley, IA, and Steven (Traci) of Minnetrista, MN; treasured grandchildren Nathan, Abby, Jonathan, Miranda, Megan, Ryan, Wade, Sydney, and Olivia; siblings Charles (Phyllis), Patricia (Gary) Johnson, Kathleen Millington-Drake, and Daniel; sister-in-law Kathleen Sullivan, and two brothers-in-law, Donnie (Donna) Schwickerath, Merle (Karen) Schwickerath; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Genevieve and Theresa; sister-in-law Marianne Mashek and brothers-in-law Francis Schwickerath, Don Mashek, and Don Sullivan.
