Marie A. Siglin, age 79 of Ionia, Iowa, died Wednesday February 7, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2018, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ionia, with Rev. Brian Dellaert celebrating the Mass. Ann Bennett will be the organist with David and Renee Voves, vocalists. Lectors for the service will be Larry Burgart, Kevin Berglund and Mark Brady. Presenting the offertory gifts are Marie's granddaughters.
Interment will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery with Tim Burgart, Will Siglin, Ben Siglin, Jack Siglin, Brian Brady and Bryce Berglund serving as pallbearers.
Friends may greet the family 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home, New Hampton where there will be a 6:30 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Marie Ann Siglin was born July 3, 1938, in Monti, IA, the daughter of Francis and Mary (Zieser) Tarpy. Marie was the youngest child and only daughter of a farming family in Buchanan County, Iowa, and attended Troy Mills schools. The family moved to Independence when Marie was a teenager and she graduated from St. John’s High School. While working at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, a friend took Marie to Ionia for a fateful visit, during which she met her husband Bill Siglin at the Hide-A-Way. The couple wed October 1, 1960, at St John’s Catholic Church in Independence. They lived briefly in Center Point before moving to their current home in Ionia in 1962.
Marie held many jobs in Ionia, but the one that brought her the most joy was owning and operating Kids Korner for more than 10 years. Anyone stopping by would find her either in the kitchen, or rocking a baby to sleep. She loved each of those kids as her own.
As much as she loved working, she so looked forward to spending the winter months with Bill in Alamo, TX. The beautiful weather and friendly community allowed her to go for daily walks, play cards and BINGO, dance at the Hall on Saturday night, and socialize with her friends.
Family meant everything to Marie. She adored all of her children and their spouses, her grandchildren, and two precious great grandchildren. She was a great role model of simple faith and love. Family gatherings were full of card games, laughter, and music, lots and lots of music. One night around the campfire, she said, “I could listen to this all night.” Marie loved to bake cookies, her signature treat was a refrigerator cookie with a slab of canned frosting and sprinkles on the top. She never showed up empty-handed.
Marie was a friend to everyone she met. The friendships she built with Bill in Ionia over the past 57 years were solid as gold. Her friends knew the door was always open and her coffee pot was always full.
Marie was an avid sports fan. She loved watching the Hawkeyes, the Creighton Blue Jays, and her favorite, the Chicago Cubs. She was also a loyal fan of the Men’s Fast pitch team of Ionia. She spent countless hours volunteering in the concession stand, working the Fish Fry, and running BINGO cards. She led a very active life.
Marie’s last 24 hours on Earth couldn’t have been more beautiful Surrounded by her children and the love of her life, she looked at each of them and said, “I’m going home.”
Survivors include her husband, Bill; five children, Jim (Cindy Randall) of New Hampton, Julie (Larry) Burgart of St. Paul, Jamie (Mark) Brady of Chicago, Jerry Siglin of Mason City, Jennifer (Kevin) Berglund of New Prauge, MN; former daughter-in-law, Dori Siglin; sixteen grandchildren, Abby (Josh) Beckman, Arica Siglin, Jennifer Burgart, Tim (Molly) Burgart, Maggie (Danny) Elenz, Mary Brady, Brian Brady, Grace Brady, Sarah Brady, Will Siglin, Ben Siglin, Jack Siglin, Bryce Berglund, Carly Berglund, Brooke (Ross) Kellogg, Jake (Cassie) Randall; two great-grandchildren, Maxon Beckman and Elliot Beckman; four sisters-in-law, Mary Tarpy of Independence, Anita Siglin of Waterloo, Mae (Harold) Rodamaker of Charles City, Thelma (Pete) Adams of Ionia.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Tom and Frank Tarpy.
