Late 3 lifts Waterloo West past Trojans

Lead Summary

The Class 1A rankings stayed exactly the same at the top of Class 1A last week, even though Springville lost to North Linn and Turkey Valley lost to Springville.  Springville is still ranked No. 1 and the Lady Trojans are still No. 2.  “I'm not surprised,” said Trojan co-coach Dan Stepan. “Not one bit. The state goes in and they see who you lost to. There are lots of 1A schools that don't play any bigger schools.”  That certainly doesn't apply to Turkey Valley. When they lost Postville on the schedule this year due to low numbers, they went for a replacement as big as you could go, a 5A school, as in Waterloo West. A high school with 1,304 students in the top three grades against one with 94.  And had it not been for a last-season shot, David would have slain Goliath. More details may be found in the Jan. 17 Tribune.
