Jerry Lee Mahan was born on Oct. 8, 1938, to Lelland and Leola (Jones) Mahan in Charles City.
Jerry spent most of his young years living with his grandparents on their farm just north of Nashua. He helped out on the farm, attended several country schools, and loved to go hunting and fishing with his brother. He attended Nashua High School and was a member of the Class of 1957.
Around that time, he met a pretty girl from the Ionia area named Sharon Alton, the two began dating, they fell in love and were married in 1958. Their family grew to include a son, Preston, and a daughter, Jeraldine.
After graduating from high school, Jerry took a job at HydroTile in Nashua, and when the plant closed, he worked at White Farm in Charles City until that plant closed in the early 1990s. He then went to work as a truck driver, doing short routes and hauling grain for area farmers and cooperatives.
In 2004, he lost his wife of more than 45 years when Sharon lost her battle with Lupus, and that was difficult for him, but he found love again through Yahoo Personals, which is how he met Sandra Sommer. The two dated and were married in 2007, and he moved from Nashua to the Jerico area and welcomed Sandy’s family into his.
Jerry never really lost his love for the outdoors, and he loved going out his back door to do a little fishing in the pond he and Sandy put in the backyard. He also loved being a grandfather to his six grandchildren, and he was known for spoiling them a time or two.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sandy Mahan of Jerico; one son, Preston (Pat) Mahan of Nashua; three stepsons, Martin (Dawn) Van Brunning of New Hampton, Michael (Tanya) Brunning of Kansas City, Missouri, and Eric Brunning of Phoenix; one daughter, Jeraldine Knittle of Cedar Falls; one step-daughter, Leonra Darrah of Ridgeway; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack (Lois) Mahan of Colwell; and one sister, Dawn (Mike) Hammond of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley Mahan.
