Chickasaws need to catch break
Matt Schult and his New Hampton girls basketball team aren’t going to push the proverbial panic button. That doesn’t mean, however, that the Chickasaw girls basketball coach was all that happy with Tuesday night’s 67-31 loss to Waverly-Shell Rock. “I expected more, and I think the girls did, too,” he said after New Hampton lost its second straight game to fall to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in Northeast Iowa Conference play. “I think it was a case that we didn’t play very well, and let’s face it, Waverly has a good team, but the girls and we coaches know we’re better than we showed.” Class 3A New Hampton was coming off a loss to Class 5A fifth-ranked Cedar Falls, and struggled almost from the start against the Go-Hawks, who are ranked 10th in Class 4A. Waverly-Shell Rock jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead, built the advantage to 39-19 at halftime and cruised to a win that kept the Go-Hawks in the race for the Northeast Iowa Conference title.
