Chickasaw girls split weekend games

Since Denver only had two wins coming into a non-conference game against New Hampton Friday, the 9-3 Chickasaws were the undeniable favorite.  But no one told Denver. Although New Hampton did score a 51-41 win, it was by no means a runaway.  "Coach [Jordan] Richards put it in an interesting way after the game: If you let a bee continue to buzz around, it might just sting you in the end," explained New Hampton head coach Matt Schult. "Denver fit that explanation perfectly, except our girls finished strong to swat that bee."  At the end of a quarter, New Hampton was in the lead, 10-7. "We had a slow start," Schult said. "It took us a little bit to get going. I'll attribute that to our last game being a full week before and Denver hustling well in the first 2-3 zone defense we faced this year."      The Cyclones took an 11-10 lead early in the second quarter before New Hampton went on a 15-3 run to grab a 25-14 halftime lead.  For the full story, please see the Jan. 24 Tribune.
