Chickasaw girls play ‘nice host’ little too literally

Lead Summary

If the first half would have lasted three minutes on Monday night, the New Hampton girls basketball team wouldn’t have been in bad shape.  Unfortunately, halves in high school basketball are 16 minutes, and a combination of too many New Hampton turnovers and a Clear Lake offense that was clicking on all cylinders doomed the Chickasaws.  Clear Lake, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls Athletic Union, raced out to a 41-11 halftime lead and never really looked back on its way to a 61-30 non-conference victory.  “It was just one of those nights when those floodgates opened and we couldn’t find a way to close them,” New Hampton coach Matt Schult said. “It was a little uncharacteristic for us, but then again, Clear Lake had something to do with it.”  Three minutes into the game, though, New Hampton held a 4-3 lead.  The rest of the story may be found in the Jan. 13 Tribune.
