Carl Edgar Schmidt dies at 86
Carl Edgar Schmidt, age 86 of New Hampton, passed away Wednesday Sept. 6, 2017, at Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton.A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at Holy Family Parish in New Hampton with Rev. Brian Dellaert celebrating the Mass. Lectors for the service will be Marcia Schmidt and Gayle Poncelot. Presenting the offertory gifts are Madison Schmidt and Paula Schmidt.Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Hampton with grandsons, Christopher Blong, Caleb Schmidt, T.C. Alex, Cody Schmidt, Mitchell Schmidt, Eric Schmidt, Colton Schmidt, Jackson Alex, David Alex, Austin Schmidt and Tristen Schmidt serving as pallbearers. Military rites will be conducted by the New Hampton American Legion . Granddaughters, Andrea Lohafer, Theresa Schmidt, Madison Schmidt, Heidi Schmidt, Paula Schmidt and Nicole Schmidt are honorary pallbearers.Friends greeted the family from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017 at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton where there was a 6:30 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continued an hour prior to the Mass on Saturday at Church. Online condolences for Carl's family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.comCarl Edgar Schmidt was born February 5, 1931 in New Hampton, the only child of William and Alice (Edgar) Schmidt. He attended country schools in rural New Hampton. When Carl was younger he really enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting and going turtling were two of his favorite things to do. Carl was a 1949 graduate of New Hampton High School.After high school, he met the love of his life, Margaret Burgart, while at the roller skating rink in New Hampton. The couple were married on October 4, 1952 at the Justice of Peace Church in Cedar Rapids, IA. To this union seven children were born. Shortly after their marriage Carl was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Riley, KS as a cook before being honorable discharged in 1953.In 1958 Carl took his correspondence course in refrigeration. His family remembers him studying for long hours to pass his tests. Carl passed and started his own business repairing refrigeration and cooling units. From that point on he was known as “Cool Carl”. If a unit wasn't cooling right, he would fix it, no matter the type. Everyone knew him as 'Cool Carl'.After retirement Carl and Margaret traveled a lot. Carl truly enjoyed traveling around the world with the love of his life. The couple went to Alaska, Australia, New York City, Washington D.C., California, Mackinaw Island and Mardis Gras in New Orleans. During their adventures, together the couple met many friends and made many great memories.Carl is survived by his wife of 64 years Margaret of New Hampton; four sons, Cubby Schmidt of New Hampton, William Schmidt of New Hampton, Tom (Marcia) Schmidt of Marion, David (Gayle Poncelot) Schmidt of New Hampton; three daughters, Carla (Roger) Dreckman of Lawler, Mary Ellen (Tim) Alex of Springhill, KS, Susan (Kyle Tougas) Schmidt of Fort Ripley, Minn; seventeen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, Emmett VanLo, Karl Lohafer, Otto Lohafer, Henry Blong, Vivian Blong, Jayde Alex, Rigby Schmidt; two furry friends, Carmel and Sassy.He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Lori Schmidt.
