Youth shall be served
Maybe the best way to put it is this: New Hampton is an unproven lot when it comes to varsity football heading into the 2021 season.
The Chickasaws are young. The Chickasaws are surely lacking when it comes to experience
“We believe we have some really good football players,” New Hampton coach Scott Frerichs said, “but they are going to show that on the varsity field. We have a lot of guys on this team who haven’t been starters, but now it’s their opportunity to step up onto the field and lead the way.”
Frerichs is entering his 29th season at the helm of the Chickasaws and his squad is coming off a tough 2-6 season in which New
Hampton lost four “one-score” games. Although there are some veterans on this 2021 team, they are relatively few and far between.
Three seniors have had starting roles during their career. Drake Wemark has started the past two years at tight end and is moving to flanker this year. Jacob Burgart was a starter on the defensive line last fall while Mason Lane started eight games as a sophomore and one as a junior at quarterback.
Two other seniors — lineman Zach Utley and fullback/linebacker Tyler Wiltse — were letterwinners a year ago, and five juniors – Isaac Howe, Evan Knowlton, Brady Speltz, Carter Steinlage and Ben Tenge – also earned letters in 2020.
