Trojans fall in double OT
Given the bizarre year 2020 has bestowed upon us, a double overtime game was probably an appropriate way for Turkey Valley to begin its football season.
And in terms of scoring, the young Trojans put more touchdowns on the board than their guests.
If only they’d added a couple of conversions along the way.
Turkey Valley lost 38-36 to Riceville Friday, and since this year’s schedule didn’t call for the typical non-district games, this game counts for the district standings.
Because of the aforementioned strange year, senior night was held during the first game this year. After honoring seniors — football players Patrick Haskins, Kalvin Langreck, Cael Wickham and an absent Dani Tinajero; cross country’s Jaycie Byrne and cheerleaders Isabella Langreck and Chya Maklenburg — the Trojans took the field and scored on their first possession.
Given the number of players missing from last year’s 11-1 campaign — 14 — scoring on the first drive was promising, and the Trojans did it under the direction of quarterback Kalvin Langreck. The senior ran in the final 10 yards for a 6-0 lead, then passed to Marcus Herold for 24 yards later in the quarter for a 12-0 lead.
