Tough ending to a historic season for Chickasaws

West Sioux scored three first-inning runs and then got a two-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning, and that hole proved too deep for the New Hampton baseball team in its first-ever appearance at the state tournament as the Falcons came away with a 7-2 victory in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament Monday.
New Hampton ended its historic season with a 28-10 record, and as disappointing as the finish was, the Chickasaws had plenty to celebrate when it came to 2019.
The Chickasaws won their fifth-straight Northeast Iowa Conference title, and after stumbling into the postseason — losing four straight — they righted themselves with wins over Lake Mills, Osage and Oelwein to win the Class 2A substate title.
But on Monday, the Chickasaws just couldn't solve West Sioux's Hunter Dekkers, the junior who has already committed to play quarterback at Iowa State.
Dekkers' inside-the-park homer made it 5-0, and while the Chickasaws worked Dekkers for five walks, they couldn't get a hit off the Falcons' star.
After West Sioux went to its bullpen in the fifth, New Hampton finally broke through as Carson Babcock singled and moved to third on a Mason Cleveland double. Wyatt Stochl's groundout scored Babcock, whose older brother, Max, popped out but Cleveland aggressively tagged up and scored.
That made it 7-2, but that was as close as the Chickasaws were going to get.
