Seniors put Chickasaws back on track

New Hampton has just lost its second straight game — the first time the Chickasaws had experienced a two-game losing streak in four years — Friday night when coach Cory McDonald laid down the proverbial gauntlet to his seniors.
“We challenged the seniors after game one to lead, to put this team on their backs and go out there and show how Chickasaw baseball responds,” he said, “and to their credit, they came out and competed and did just that.”
A night after dropping a 7-1 non-conference decision to Denver, New Hampton played listless baseball — committing five errors, walking seven batters and giving up seven unearned runs — in another 7-1 loss to Northeast Iowa Conference rival Oelwein. Suddenly, the Class 2A seventh-ranked Chickasaws who started the season 12-0, outscoring its opponents 102-36, looked vulnerable.
