A plus on the ‘O’ but a minus on ‘D’

Ryan Rausch liked the offensive output from his top players last Tuesday, despite a 73-52 loss to Charles City.
“Yeah, if Conner [Rochford] gets 16 points and Drake [Wemark] gets 14 points I like to think we can win some basketball games,” said the New Hampton boys coach. But as he pointed at the scorebook he continued, “It’s not going to happen when we allow the other guys to score 15 points, 18 points, 19 points….we were bound and determined to not let them penetrate and they did. We couldn’t keep them away from the basket, we weren’t cutting them off the baseline.”
The Chickasaws’ only lead of the night came in the first minutes, as, after a Cael Leistikow shot, New Hampton had a steal and basket by Wemark to go up 4-2. By the end of the quarter the NH boys were down 17-12, and by the end of a three-minute scoring drought to start the second quarter they trailed 24-12.
“Charles City shot good in the first half,” said Wemark. “We let the game get away from us, and we turned the ball over too much.”
Carter Steinlage scored on three straight possessions in the second quarter when his teammates found him underneath the basket, but those buckets were offset, and then some, by three straight 3-pointers by the Comets’ Kaden Barry. He finished with 19 points to lead all scorers.
