NH/TV claims district title, qualifies four
Mason Cleveland’s record in early January stood at 26-11, which may have been pretty solid for a lot of wrestlers but didn’t come close to the standards the New Hampton/Turkey Valley senior had for himself.
“I knew I had to turn myself around because that wasn’t me,” Cleveland said, “and I just had to kind of reset, refocus, re-everything.”
Whatever he did back in early January worked wonders, and the latest proof came Saturday when Cleveland recorded two second-period pins to claim the 126-pound title at the Class 2A district tournament.
He joined Max Babcock (145), Evan Rosonke (182) and Carter Reicks (220) as district champions to give the Chickasaws four qualifiers for the state tournament that begins Thursday night in Des Moines.
“I’m in a really good place right now,” Cleveland said after he pinned Union’s Lake Lebahn one minute into the second period of his finals match. “My mentality wasn’t where it should have been. I was frustrated, but I also knew that first-half of the season wasn’t me. I had to find my confidence and start wrestling the way I knew I could.”
