New Hampton tops Charles City 15-8

New Hampton used two touchdown passes from Conner Rochford, a strong running attack and an opportunistic defense to open the 2020 season with a 15-8 victory over Charles City Friday night.
The two teams played a scoreless first half before New Hampton got on the board by going 58 yards on nine plays, capping off the drive with a Rochford-to-Nathan O’Donnell pass of 31 yards to take a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the quarter.
The Chickasaws took a two-touchdown early in the fourth quarter lead when /Rochford found Drake Wemark on a slant, fired a bullet and watched the junior tight end turn it into a 35-yard touchdown pass. Ryan Pickar’s two-point conversion run made it 15-0.
But Charles City wouldn’t go away and cut the lead to 15-8 with 5:26 left, but New Hampton kept the ball for the next 5:19 before turning the ball on downs. The Comets’ last gasp effort was picked off by Drake Wemark, the fourth turnover of the night forced by New Hampton.
It was New Hampton’s first opening win since New Hampton beat Charles City 14-0 to kick off the 2017 season.
