NEIC breakthrough
The program says Drake Wemark is a freshman; his play on the court begs to differ.
And the latest proof of his emergence came Friday night as he scored 21 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, to help lead the Chickasaws to a 63-58 victory over Oelwein.
“It has been a big jump,” Wemark said. “Going from eighth-grade ball last year to varsity, trust me, it’s way different. The game’s a lot faster and the guys are a lot stronger. I found that out at [the NIACC Team] Camp. I got knocked over a few times, but I’m getting used to it.”
Is he ever, and his play late in Friday’s game helped give the Chickasaws their first conference win as they improved to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the NEIC.
“I think the thing with Drake is — and I don’t want to sound like an idiot — but it’s true, he’s just good at basketball,” said New Hampton coach Ryan Rausch after Wemark raised his scoring average to 11.8 points a game.
