Nashua-Plainfield gets a mat lesson in bonus points
No one — not the five managers or the three coaches — had a clue what the team score was last Thursday as Nashua-Plainfield’s Trey Nelson was taking on North Butler/Clarksville’s Cade Hardy in a 120-pound match.
Nelson had let Hardy go to try to get another takedown, and with 10 seconds left, he finally got it to score a 12-4 major decision.
That extra bonus point meant everything as the Huskies, who had lost two meets earlier in the night, won the dual with their rivals 39-38.
“It was crazy. West Hancock and Central Springs were done with their meet,” Nashua-Plainfield coach Al Frost said, “and so we’re wrestling on two mats and no one can keep up with what the team score is. So Trey and the North Butler kid are the only kids left and we’re just working on trying to get a major with no idea how important that was going to be. When the smoke cleared and we got it all figured out, what do you know, we got a win.”
