Leslie W. Borcherding dies at 93
Leslie W. Borcherding, 93, of Davenport, formerly of New Hampton, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at Crest Health Center in Davenport. Funeral services will be 12 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, 2106 at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton. The service will be preceded by visitation at 11 a.m. and followed by a luncheon at 1p.m. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner following the luncheon. Weerts Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.Leslie was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Sumner, to Henry and Wilhelmina (Block) Borcherding. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1939. He married Delight Sarah McDowell in 1945 at First Methodist Church in Waverly. She preceded him in death in 2009 after sixty-three years of marriage.Leslie led a full life devoted to his family, his church and community. He worked as a Farm Service petroleum salesman for twenty years, a co-op manager in Waverly for eight years, and a manager for FS in New Hampton for ten years. For many years, he served as a church council member, Sunday School treasurer, congregational chair, choir member, usher, chairman of several building committees, and a member of Christian Crusaders Board of Directors. He served as a longtime member of Rotary and Lion’s Club, the New Hampton Park Board, Sumner City Council member, and treasurer of the Sumner Baseball Club. His volunteer work included driving countless patients to appointments at Mayo Clinic, delivering Meals on Wheels, preparing annual community Thanksgiving dinners, donating gallons of blood, and maintaining the city parks, the pool and cemeteries. In 1995, he was named a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship by Lions Club International for his dedicated humanitarian services.Survivors include his children and their spouses: daughters Marilyn (Andy) Wottreng, Brainerd, Minn., and Bev (Glen) Soenksen, Bettendorf; sons Ron (Diane) Borcherding and Dave (Kathy) Borcherding, all of Bettendorf, and Darryl (Jamie) Borcherding, Marion; thirteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.In addition to his wife Delight, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters Elsie Albrecht, Emilda Niewoehner, and Edna Kempin; and five brothers Werner, Arthur, Emil, Alfred and Erwin Borcherding.His family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the devoted staff at Ridgecrest Village, both at Oakwood Assisted Living and Crest Health Center, for their compassionate care over the past thirteen years.Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, or Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.Online remembrances and condolences may be expressed to the Borcherding family by visiting this obituary at www.WeertsFH.com
