Leona Margaret Kammeyer was born November 9, 1924 at St Joseph Hospital in New Hampton, Iowa to Leo W. and Lina (Weidler) Denner. She was baptized the same day, confirmed April 2, 1939 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, now Trinity, New Hampton, Iowa.
Leona graduated from Boyd School.
Leona was united in marriage to Wilmer H. Kammeyer on March 6, 1947 at St Paul’s Lutheran Parsonage, New Hampton, Iowa. The couple welcomed two children, Carol Ann and LaVern James. Wilmer preceded her in death in August 1991.Leona was a hard-working farm wife, who lived on the farm until 1992 when she moved into New Hampton. Then she became a resident of Linn Haven in 2014.
Leona looked forward to and loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed various kinds of puzzles (jig-saw, crossword, word search), playing checkers, chicken-foot with dominoes, as well as playing cards with friends. Embroidery and needlepoint were enjoyable to her also. Leona’s family will remember her spending time in the garden and canning the produce she lovingly grew. Though she was not a traveler, she did enjoy traveling through pictures and stories from the adventures of others.
Leona will be remembered by many as a “worry-wort” with a heart of gold that also could be opinionated with sass and spunk. She was very proud of each of her family members and their accomplishments.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Carol (Gary) Kalvig and son, LaVern (Shirley) Kammeyer; her grandchildren, Lori (Eric) Lohmann, Tiffany (Michael) Lloyd, Lacey (Todd) Kelley; her great grandchildren, Austin, Carly, Mishayla, Vinny, Gabriel, Connor, Collins, Kass, Michael, Isac, Maeli and a baby due any day; her sister-in-law, Lois Denner; brother-in-law, Alvin “Bud” Paulson and many nieces and nephews.
