Learning a valuable lesson

To say the Nashua-Plainfield offense was struggling in the first quarter of last week’s game against North Butler would be an understatement.
But if there is a truism in basketball, it is this: Defense can lead to offense.
The proof in that adage was found that night by the Huskies, who ramped up the defensive pressure, got some easy baskets and rolled to a 56-31 victory over their arch-rivals. And two nights later, the Huskies were at it again, closing out their 2018 portion of the schedule with a 58-32 victory over Riceville.
“We got what we wanted, which was two wins,” said Nashua-Plainfield coach Sam Brown, whose team evened its record at 4-4 with the win over Riceville, “and I think one of the best parts about last week was we got a lot of contributions from a lot of different players.”
And the Huskies learned — or at least were reminded — that sometimes a good defense leads to a lot of offense.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the second quarter against North Butler, Brown put a three-quarters court pressure defense in, and Nashua-Plainfield outscored the Bearcats 18-7 to take a 21-11 halftime lead.
“We got some steals that led to some run outs and easy baskets,” he said, “and that was the difference.
