Former Chickasaw shines at Midlands

Lead Summary

For those who wrestled Michael Blockhus in high school, this may sound a bit scary.
“I think I’m definitely more focused on the mat,” the University of Northern Iowa freshman said when asked how he’s changed as a wrestler since graduating from New Hampton High School last spring. “One of the things you realize in college is that if you’re not focused all the time, if you get yourself out of position at all, these guys are good enough to take advantage of it.”
Blockhus has had relatively little trouble taking that step up to the next level.
Wrestling “unattached” so that he can keep his redshirt status, Blockhus is 18-4 after making a spirited run at the Midlands, one of college wrestling’s oldest and prestigious tournaments, this past weekend.
More on the story may be found in the Jan. 1 Tribune.
