First half not enough for New Hampton girls

Chad Pemble stood in the hallway at Waverly-Shell Rock High School and talked about getting his New Hampton girls basketball team over the hump.
The Chickasaws had just played Waverly-Shell Rock tough but came out on the short end of a 57-44 score, and while Pemble gave his team an A for effort, he wanted more.
“Look, we showed tonight that we can play with Waverly,” he said, “but now we just have to figure out how to get to the top of that mountain. I know the scoreboard says it’s a 13-point game, but in my mind, we’re right there with them or at least we’re dang close.”
Case in point was the first half.
New Hampton held several leads through the first 16 minutes and with both Kallie Olson and Isabel Leichtman scoring seven points, it trailed just 21-17 to a team that had beaten the Chickasaws soundly last month.
Yet, their coach thought the Chickasaws should have been in the lead heading into the locker room.
“We gave up probably six or seven offensive rebound baskets, and honestly, if we do a better job of boxing out, we could have been up by six, eight points.”
