Fast start lifts Chickasaws past GHV
New Hampton used a fast start and a stingy defense to roll to a 28-10 victory over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Friday night, and in the process, set up a winner-take-all game against Clear Lake next week.
The Chickasaws struck early when Mason Cleveland hauled in a 26-yard pass from Keagan John less than three minutes into the game.
After New Hampton’s Alex Schumacher recovered a short kickoff, New Hampton again had a short field, and John’s 1-yard sneak made it 13-0 with 7:38 left in the first quarter.
Braydon Fisher’s 29-yard run on the first play of the second quarter and John’s two-point conversion run made it 21-0.
But the Cardinals made it interesting by scoring the next 10 points before a John 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter seemed to take the air out of GHV.
Meanwhile, New Hampton’s defense shut down the Cardinals’ running game, and the Chickasaws constantly harassed GHV quarterback Ryan Meyers as Noah Fenske, Josh Fenske, Dillon Roberson, Tom Clark and Trevor Ferrie all recorded sacks.
The win put New Hampton at 6-2 overall and 5-1 in district play. Clear Lake clinched a playoff bid Friday night with a 21-0 win over Crestwood, but New Hampton can claim Class 2A, District 2’s top seed with a win next Friday in Clear Lake.
