In the driver’s seat
New Hampton had just watched an early 3-0 lead turn into a 7-4 loss to Waverly-Shell Rock Monday night.
If the Chickasaws wanted to win a fourth-straight Northeast Iowa Conference championship, they almost had to win the nightcap of the doubleheader, yet there was no panic in their eyes; in fact, if there was anything New Hampton’s players displayed, it was supreme confidence.
“As soon as we took the field for that second game, I just knew we were going to win, absolutely, positively knew it,” New Hampton coach Cory McDonald said. “Josh [Fenske] gave them this rousing speech, we had Z on the mound and this team all season long has felt like it had something to prove.”
It turned out McDonald nailed it.
Aden Zwanziger was, as he often has been this year, brilliant — tossing a five-hitter — and the Chickasaws used some timely hitting to pull out a 4-1 victory over the Go-Hawks, and the following night, thanks to a New Hampton sweep of Waukon and a split between Waverly-Shell Rock and Decorah, New Hampton found itself all alone atop the NEIC standings.
