Coming on strong

Among the areas coach Chad Pemble said his team did well in during a Tuesday night 56-26 win over Charles City was defense and sharing the ball. Lauren Frerichs had a big hand in both.
One of the senior leaders on the team, Frerichs worked her way into the starting line-up as a sophomore and has been there ever since. Her defensive effort — along with that of her teammates — kept the Chickasaws in the game early.
“We got off to a slower start than the first time we played Charles City,” Frerichs began. “They improved a lot and that showed in the first quarter. But we’re really a good defensive team, we get in the passing lanes. If I have a bad game shooting, I do what I can to help the team defensively.”
Frerichs had seven points in the win, but led the team in steals with six and added four assists.
“The more you steal the ball, the less confident they’ll be.”
The teams played nearly three minutes before either got on the scoreboard, Alexa Wemark made a free throw for the first point. And even though the NH girls bothered the Comets with several steals, the Chickasaws could not capitalize and the score at the quarter break was 7-5.
“The first quarter the lid was on the basket,” said coach Chad Pemble.
