Chickasaws suffer ‘stinging’ loss

New Hampton boys basketball coach Ryan Rausch sat in the locker room Tuesday night, put his face into his hands and deeply sighed.
“Yeah, this one stings a little; actually, it stings a lot,” the first-year coach said after his team fell to Charles City 69-62. “Save for two, three minutes, we did what we had to do, but we let them that run they had get away from us and that’s on me. I’d like that back. Man, I’d like that back a lot.”
New Hampton survived foul trouble to build a 48-41 lead after three quarters of play but couldn’t finish off the Comets; instead, Charles City opened the quarter with a 12-2 run to take a 53-50 lead.
The Chickasaws would tie the game on an old-fashioned three-point play by Drake Wemark with 4:34 left, but the Comets’ Jack Molstead, who had 14 fourth quarter points, scored two quick buckets and Charles City pulled away for the win.
“We got into a little bit of a scramble mode and maybe I should have called a timeout just to get us settled down,” Rausch said after his team fell to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast Iowa Conference. “What I want our guys to understand and build on is those first three quarters because, man, there were a lot of positives.”
