Chickasaws rally for key win

Lead Summary

A couple of months ago — maybe even a few weeks ago — it wouldn’t have happened, but this is a vastly different New Hampton boys basketball team.   The Chickasaws dug themselves out of two holes — one early and one late — and survived a wild finish to beat Crestwood 68-67 Monday night and keep their hopes alive for a second-place finish in the Northeast Iowa Conference.   “I don’t know before Christmas if we really believed it,” said junior Tyler Rentschler, who came up with the steal that led to the basket that put New Hampton up for good.      “[Our coaches] kept telling us we can be a good team, and now, we’re believing in ourselves.”   To get this win, though, New Hampton put themselves and their fans through a night where an on-call cardiologist was needed.   Crestwood jumped out to a 13-2 lead but New Hampton rallied, and when senior Zach Heying hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, Crestwood’s lead was down to 21-19.  For the full story, please see the Feb. 10 Tribune.
