Chickasaws fall to South Hamilton in substate
The start was almost perfect for the New Hampton boys basketball team Saturday afternoon, but then, the magic disappeared for the Chickasaws.
And just like that, a marvelous postseason run came to an abrupt halt as South Hamilton used a 27-1 run that spanned the last half of the second quarter and most of the third quarter to roll to a 63-31 victory in the Class 2A substate game.
“That’s a really good basketball team South Hamilton has,” New Hampton coach Ryan Rausch said, “and we just ran out of bullets. We can say this about that and that about this, but we lost to a really good team. … It’s hard, but these guys gave us a hell of a run.”True that.
New Hampton came into the post season 9-11 and some even questioned how the Chickasaws had earned a third seed in the district tournament, but the Chickasaws upset Aplington-Parkersburg and Crestwood to win the district title and took an early 11-5 lead against South Hamilton.
But the Hawks, who improved to 21-1, rallied and pulled away in the second half.
The Chickasaws were led by Tristan Swetizer's 11 points and closed the season at 12-12.
