Chickasaws cruise past Mason City
Kill efficiency is just one stat among many in a volleyball box score, but New Hampton put up another eye-popping number on Thursday as the Chickasaws rolled to a sweep of Mason City in their home opener.
Two days after recording a kill efficiency of .489 in a sweep of Nashua-Plainfield, the Chickasaws put up a .379 on Thursday.
The efficiency is figured out by subtracting the number of errors from kills and dividing that by the number of attack attempts, and to put New Hampton’s attack proficiency in context, a year ago, the state’s best kill efficiency was a .383 put up by Class 5A state champion Cedar Falls.
“Honestly, we don’t look at it all that much,” New Hampton coach Jess Geerts said, “but a lot — some which doesn’t have stats to go with it — goes into it. To have a good attack, it’s a team thing. You need a good pass, a good set and obviously a good spike. We saw a lot of good things this first week, but we obviously need to keep working to get better.”
Still, it was a dominating first week for the Chickasaws.
As it did against Nashua-Plainfield on Tuesday, New Hampton took control from the start against the Class 4A Mohawks.
