Chickasaws advance six to state wrestling
In the toughest district in the state, six had to be enough for the New Hampton wrestling team on Saturday. That’s the number of Chickasaws who advanced out of the Class 2A district tournament in Decorah as New Hampton crowned five champions and sent one runner-up to this week’s traditional state tournament. New Hampton’s champions included Michael Millage at 126, Noah Fye at 132, Keaton Geerts at 138, Ryan Gorman at 160 and Noah Glaser at 170 while Noah Hopp battled his way to a runner-up finish at 220. For Millage, Fye and Geerts, it marked the third time in their storied careers that they will take to the mats at the state tournament. Gorman, meanwhile, earned his second straight trip to state while Glaser and Hopp will make their individual state meet debuts on Thursday night. “I don’t think it gets old or anything like that at all,” Fye said. “I think it’s everyone’s dream to go there, and once you’ve been there, you want to get back.” Fye is part of a New Hampton trio that has dominated the lower middle weights this year, and that threesome showed its power Saturday.
