Chickasaw boys advance with win over Sailors
New Hampton senior Cody Shultz has proven how much he wants to play basketball, but Monday night, he upped his game — coming up with a career night to help the Chickasaws keep their season alive with a 60-46 win over Waterloo Columbus.
How bad did Shultz want to take the floor for the Chickasaws? He has lost 85 pounds in two years.
“I mean it wasn’t good for me anyway,” he said after he scored a career-high 15 points, “but I also knew if I wanted to play basketball, I couldn’t be lugging that extra weight around.”
And the 6-foot-3 Shultz has been a key contributor off the bench for the Chickasaws as he came into the postseason averaging four points and three rebounds an outing.
“I loved having him on my team tonight,” New Hampton coach Ryan Rausch said after his team improved to 6-14 and earned a trip to Osage Thursday night for a district semifinal game against the second-seeded Green Devils. “I mean I always love having him on my team because he’s the kind of kid who realized what he had to do to play and put a ton of work into it.”
And early on, he kept the Chickasaws in the game as he scored six first-quarter points as Columbus, which finished the season 3-19, took a 13-8 lead.
