Back where they belong
For some college football programs, a 6-4 record is acceptable.
Wartburg, though, is not just “some” program; instead, it has been one of the consistent powers of the Iowa Conference.
So when the Knights finished 2016 with that 6-4 mark, their goal was simple — return to the top of the Iowa Conference.
“We had three extremely great years before last year, so 6-4 didn’t feel really all that good,” said junior linebacker Connor Frerichs, one of three former New Hampton High School stars who play key roles in Wartburg football.
“Last offseason was amped a lot. We knew if we put in the same offseason we had the year before, we might get the same result and no one wanted that. We worked all the time. We went in extra. We just wanted to make sure we put everything we had into this year.”
And the results speak for themselves — a perfect 10-0 regular season, a top-15 national ranking and a trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs, which open on Saturday when Wartburg hosts Franklin (Ind.) College, a school located about 20 miles from Indianapolis.
