Accomplishing the goal

Mason Cleveland figured Tuesday night sooner or later his New Hampton teammates would bust open the game, but even if they didn’t, the Chickasaws would be just fine.
They were, thanks in large part to a monster game from Cleveland, who figured in both New Hampton runs at the plate, completed a double play in the field and threw four no-hit innings on the mound.
Add it all up, and eighth-ranked New Hampton had a 2-1 victory over North Fayette Valley and earned a spot in Saturday’s district final game against Denver, a 15-1 winner over Waukon in Tuesday’s first game.
“It doesn’t matter what the score is, the only thing that matters is winning games in the playoffs,” Cleveland said after the Chickasaws improved to 27-5. “Our goal was to keep playing. It wasn’t to win by whatever, it was just to win.”
Goal accomplished, although North Fayette Valley, which came into the game with a 14-17 record, gave New Hampton one heck of a battle.
