Wayne Albert Lienau, 85

Wayne Albert Lienau, age 85 of Sumner, Iowa died at his home on Saturday, August 18, 2018, surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle of lung cancer. 
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2018, at Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg, with Pastor Jim Reid officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery with military rites by the Thomas E Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner.

Wayne Albert Lienau, son of Albert and Hilda (Steege) Lienau was born January 21, 1933, in rural Fredericksburg, Iowa. He was baptized and then confirmed at Peace Evangelical & Reformed Church in Fredericksburg. He received his early education in rural Fredericksburg prior to graduating from Sumner High School in 1951. On October 12, 1953, he was united in marriage to Yvonne (Leyh) at Peace Evangelical & Reformed Church. Wayne was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean Conflict. After his service, Wayne, along with his wife and four daughters operated the family farm south of Fredericksburg with crop operations and raising cattle, turkeys, and hogs. Wayne and Yvonne retired from farming in 1996.
Wayne enjoyed life to the fullest; he was always ready to have good times with family and friends.  Family was very important to him. He enjoyed the outdoors hunting deer, pheasant, and turkey, along with hunting antelope in Wyoming. He loved his fishing and camping trips to Minnesota, Canada, and the Mississippi River. Many family memories were made at their trailer in Harpers Ferry. Wayne and Yvonne followed their children and grandchildren in school activities. He enjoyed playing games and his favorite card games of Euchre & Schafkopf. He made many woodworking projects for his family. Wayne and Yvonne were busy with traveling, snowmobiling, and bowling.Wayne was a lifelong member of Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg. He served on the Church council. He was a Dekalb Seed Dealer, member of the Sumner American Legion, the Fredericksburg Farmers Co-op, and the Bremer County Farm Bureau.
Wayne will always be remembered as a gentleman and a gentle man.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Yvonne; four daughters, Cathy (Jerry) Buhr of Sumner, IA, Julie (Rick) Chase of Cedar Falls, IA, Lynne (Keith) Niemann, Lisa (Jeff T) Leyh, all of Sumner, IA; eleven grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer), Jeremy (Sherri), and Luke (Jordan) Buhr, Travis Atkins, Andrea (Travis) Cagley, Missy (David) Hinders, Leslie (Chad) Lyons, Heather Zaruba, Britnee (Andy) Scharnhorst, Kyle (Amber) Niemann, and Jessica (Dan) Zmoos, twenty four great-grandchildren, Blaine, Olivia, Brett, Chase, Jackson, Mora, Creyton, Audrey, James, Emma, Julia, Lillian, Baylee, Brooke, Natalee, Chase, Grace, Lydia, Cole, Reed, Kate, Stella, Emery, Phillip; one sister; Mary (Leon) Nicklaus of Sumner; sister-in-law, Burnita Lienau of Fredericksburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, LaVerne Lienau; his in-laws, Matthew & Mabel Leyh.
