Trojans turn up pressure, pick up key UIC win
Keeping pace is crucial in the race to repeat.
That’s exactly what head coach Chris Sullivan and his Turkey Valley Trojans did.
TV (8-4) amped up its defense and knocked down key shots late to hold off MFL-Mar-Mac for a satisfying, 59-55, road victory a week ago this past Tuesday in Upper Iowa Conference boys basketball action.
In the process, the Trojans remained in a tie with second-place South Winneshiek in the league standings. Each team sports a 7-2 conference record and still stares up at North Fayette Valley, which is in first place at 9-0.
Turkey Valley is the four-time defending conference champ and raced out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead only to see MFL close that deficit and take a 30-29 halftime lead. MFL was outscored 19-9 in the final period and fell to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in league play.
“The kids really showed a lot of grit tonight as things were looking easy early on but then we got smacked in the face in that second quarter and we responded with a solid second half of basketball,” said Sullivan.
