TRIBE Trail lands key grant

The proposed TRIBE Trail took a giant step toward becoming a reality last week when officials were notified that it had received a $75,000 grant.“It’s a big one, and really gets us to work on ‘Phase 1’ of the project,” New Hampton Parks and Recreation Director Rick Kramer said. “This is huge for us, there’s no other way to put it.”Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials notified the TRIBE Committee that the trail will receive a grant from the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program.REAP grants are designed to invest in the enhancement and protection of the state’s natural and cultural resources.Part of REAP’s funds are set aside for “city parks and open spaces,” which is how New Hampton received the grant. It was one of eight cities to receive a REAP grant last week, and it also received the “maximum-allowed grant.”Under program rules, cities with a population of between 1,000 and 5,000 can receive up to $75,000 in REAP funding.“We feel like we have had pretty good momentum already,” TRIBE Trail Committee member Megan Gleason said, “and this should really help sustain that.”For the complete story see the 10/18/2016 New Hampton Tribune.
