Three conference losses for girls
Brooke Usher loves the game of basketball, loves to get in there and be physical.
But sometimes, you can’t do that.
She was on the bench with five fouls at the end of New Hampton’s 43-41 loss to Oelwein Friday night, but before the senior departed, she played with solid determination, leading to several Husky turnovers.
It was the end of a week which saw the Chickasaw girls drop three conference contests. Tuesday the team lost to Waukon, ranked 15th in Class 3A and Thursday was a make-up against Waverly-Shell Rock, ranked seventh in 4A.
But the Oelwein game was by far the most exciting. Up by eight points in the second quarter, the NH girls saw their lead diminish with a flurry of Oelwein 3-point shots in the second and third quarters.
“I think we played pretty good, but when they got all those threes we got down and couldn’t get back,” said Usher the next day.
But they did, eventually. After being down by 10, the Chickasaws worked their way back. A shot by Usher put the score at 42-36, Oelwein, with 2:32 left in the game and she forced an over-and-back call on the Huskies a short time later.
