Taking a pair
The good news was Brock Dietz was going to qualify for the district tournament either way; the bad news is the Nashua-Plainfield junior had no idea that the third-place match had punched his ticket. That meant, in Dietz’s mind at least, he was wrestling for his postseason life Saturday, but he was staring at an 8-0 deficit in his Class 1A sectional 106-pound final with Bryce Trees of North Butler. “I didn’t know who won that [third-place match] because I was just listening to my coaches and we were focusing on Trees,” Dietz said. “I knew I had to pin him, and I put a headlock on and did it.” With the fall, Dietz avenged two losses to Trees earlier in the season and earned a trip to Lake Mills this Saturday. A few minutes later, he got some company as 113-pound freshman Jakob Whitinger scored a second period pin of Central Springs’ Caileb Pate to win a sectional title.
