Students enjoy outside activities during final few days
It was decided that the intermediate school in Plainfield would have their track and field day on Tuesday of last week instead of Wednesday due to a poor weather forecast. The decision was a good one. The 4th, 5th, and 6th grade children had a great day for their track and field day. It was sunny and warm. The kids all had a good time.
Track and field day has been going on for as long as anyone can remember. Mr. Wilson, 5th grade teacher said that track and field day is a great day to get kids out of the classroom and let them try their skills at different events. Students get to participate in the long jump, high jump, discus throw, 4x100, 4x200, 3x100, 5x200, 200 meter dash and the 100 meter dash. Elementary principal Michelle Arneson said, “This is the first time a lot of these kids are getting to experience these events. The discuss, for example, is awkward for them.” Some of the children, however, had a knack for track and field.
The long jump proved to be quite easy for 6th grader Drew Wilken. He jumped 11’11.” Ellie Eick, a 4th grader, jumped 11’1.” Eick also, helped her team in the 4x100. When she got the baton no one thought she would catch up to the other team but Eick not only caught up, she passed them and won by a quite a distance. “I love track and field. It’s really fun and I’m good at it,” said Eick. “I have won the mile the last two years,” she said.
