Steamy good time
The temperature was on the wrong side of 90 degrees, the dew point was in the 70s and there wasn’t the slightest hint of a breeze Saturday evening when New Horizons-Chamber Director Jason Speltz scanned the crowd at Mikkelson Park.
“I have to tell you, I’m surprised, pleasantly surprised, that we have so many people out here,” Speltz said. “I guess it proves that we’re pretty hearty when it comes to Heartland Days.”
Mother Nature granted no favors when it came to the 2016 edition of New Hampton’s town celebration, but considering the weather that was thrown at Heartland Days, Speltz couldn’t stop smiling.
A thunderstorm played havoc with some of Friday’s activities, although the evening parade stayed dry and Baconfest, for the most part, escaped unscathed.
Saturday, meanwhile, was simply sweltering. The high temperature reached 95 degrees and the humidity was, in a word, stifling.
But Heartland Days marched on, although Speltz conceded the crowd for the afternoon activities was down from previous years.
