Seniors in the spotlight
During a sports season there’s always ups and downs. But senior night usually takes the emotions to a new level. Kayla Gilbert was feeling it after the Chickasaws lost in straight sets to Charles City Tuesday night. It wasn’t so much what happened during the match, as the Comets are ranked eighth in Class 4A with a 28-5 record and lead the conference, but while the 10 seniors — including Gilbert — were honored before the match started. “Thinking about my parents — they’re my best friends — being out there with me, that was emotional,” Gilbert said. After all 10 seniors were introduced, junior Savannah Anderson gave a short speech representing the non-seniors. “Those juniors, we’re so close to them,” Gilbert continued. “And for them to tell us we motivate them, that just makes me motivated to play that much harder.” Nine seniors dressed and all played, including Mariah Wickham, Darian Wegner, Raelei Hemann, Valerie Rinken, Mya Anderson, Lexi Rasmussen, Gilbert, Emma Nicolaisen and Ellie Ewert. Delanie Dahl was honored before the match but was injured and did not play. The full story may be found in the Oct. 14 Tribune.
