Remembering the happenings on September 11
The morning of Sept. 11 I was getting our daughter ready for the bus and making sure our son was staying out of trouble since he was in the terrible twos stage. The bus picked her up right in front of our house in Mason City so I watched her get on the bus and then I overheard the news in the other room. This is when I walked in and started watching the events of the morning in New York and realized what had happened with the first plane and then watched the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. Many people will never forget where they were on Sept. 11, 2001 but many of our children do not even remember the day or week long frenzy which occurred after that terrible day. It has now been 15 years since al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and killed over 2,900 people but I still remember what I was doing that day when I heard the news. Our children do not remember and were too young to understand the events taking place that Tuesday morning. Many children now have grown up in a world which they think events like 9/11 and mass shootings are a normal thing which happens in today’s society. They will never understand what it was like before that day just what has happened after. Our children saw the television coverage but thought it was a movie playing so never asked any questions. We had the television on in the next room but they were playing in their toy room so they did not see the images. All they knew is that they were playing with each other and they were not watching very many cartoons that week. Now teachers are teaching this event to the next generation who does not know many details of the events before or after. One article I read the teacher actually showed the footage and old newspaper clippings in all the major papers. The students were shocked on the events of the day even though it has been 15 years now.The world remembers Sept. 11, 2001 when the four airplanes were hijacked and two airplanes deliberately crashed into the World Trade Centers with another crashing into the Pentagon. The fourth plane Flight 93, the passengers fought back, made final phone calls to their loved ones and lost their lives when the plane crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania.Even 15 Septembers later, we as a nation will never forget those who lost their lives and those who had their lives changed forever that day because of terrorists and we just hope our children never have to go through events like that in their lifetime.
